And the Oscar goes to...

OMG!  The Oscars are tomorrow night and the panther loves Oscar night.  Think about it, gold statues, beautiful gowns, red carpet, sparkling lights... all things glamorous.

The Panther wants to know:
1)  Are you hosting or attending and Oscar event?
2)  What are your picks for Oscar night?
3)  Is it more about the ceremony or the red carpet?

The panther loves it all.

Being interior designers, we notice movie sets and interiors.  Look at some of these interiors from the Oscar nominated movies shared by Apartment Therapy.  http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/dc/inspiration/oscars-2011-interiors-from-the-best-picture-nominees-137951

We hope you enjoy Oscar night.  The panther is having a little Oscar soiree.  We hope to share pictures and ideas with you next week.

Maybe someday we'll have our own award ceremony... The Gilded Panther Awards and the trophy will look a little like this:
Happy Viewing!

Friday Favorites: Hot Cocktails

Baby, its cold outside, and the panther is seeking out warmth... in liquid form.  Hot cocktails are a wonderful way to warm up on a cold night and the panther's favorite drink on a cold winter night is a Hot Monkey hot chocolate.  Imagine the sweet, creamy, rich taste of hot cocoa mixed with the spicy, savory burn of hot peppers.

If you are not familiar with Hot Monkey, it is a fabulous vodka made right here in Portland, OR by the good people at New Deal Distillery.  All of their products are amazing but the panther is partial to the Hot Monkey.  Hot Monkey is New Deal Vodka that is infused with their secret blend of hot peppers.  The flavor is amazing!  It is definitely hot though.  Read more about New Deal and Hot Monkey here: http://newdealdistillery.com/Product/NewDeal/hotmonkeyvodka.html
The panther likes all things rich and velvety including her hot chocolate.  William Sonoma has a great dark hot chocolate but you can use your favorite brand.  Follow the directions for making the hot chocolate only decreasing the water by about 1 1/2 - 2 ounces.  Make sure your water is hot and that the chocolate is completely dissolved.

In a jigger, measure out 1 ounce of Hot Monkey and pour into your hot chocolate.  If you are a Hot Monkey virgin, you may want to decrease this measurement slightly.  It is spicy and should be used moderately.  The panther, as you know, is a spicy thing herself and prefers 1 - 1 1/2 ounces mixed in.  Stir the vodka in and top with a dollop of fresh whipped cream.

If you like more of a Mexican chocolate, drop in a cinnamon stick and top with some freshly grated nutmeg.  Even spicier and yummier!

Would you expect the panther to sip her hot cocktail from anything other than a gilded mug?

Cheers!
Enjoy and stay warm!
Let us know what your favorite hot cocktail is.

The Crafty Cat: Decorative Chalk Board

The panther is a crafty cat.  Take a look at this awesome project that anyone can do at home.

Next time you are out prowling flea markets, antique malls, or garage sales, keep your eye out for interesting picture frames.  Look for unusual shapes and ornate details.  It doesn't matter if you do not like the color, or if there is ugly art inside--just find a frame that speaks to you.

Once you find a frame, bring it home and clean it up.  If it has artwork or a mirror in it, take it out.  Pick out your favorite color of spray paint and paint your frame any color you wish.  The panther naturally chose gold as she loves all things gilded.  Metallic paints work very well with this project.

The next step is to pick up some Rust-Oleum chalk board paint, available at Home Depot.  It comes in brush on or spray can forms.  The panther went for the brush-on paint.

If you were fortunate to have found a frame with a mirror in it, your work is already "cut out" for you.  If you don't have a mirror, trace a template of the frame opening and have a piece of 1/4" - 1/8" board cut to fit.
Take the mirror out and turn it around and paint the back side, or sand your piece of board smooth and paint.  With a foam roller, roll on the black board paint in a nice even coat.  Wait until fully dry and apply another coat.  Repeat 2-3 times until a nice thick layer is achieved.

When the mirror or board is dry, put back in the frame and attach.  Wait at least three days before using chalk on the board.  Initially, rub a piece of chalk on its side to cover entire blackboard surface, then erase.  Now your custom blackboard is ready to use.

Look how pretty!  The panther's is in her kitchen to write each night's menu on.

Share pictures of your chalk board and let us know how you use it.

Color Inspiration: The Bronze Age

It is February and winter is still hanging on, but we are so ready for spring.  It is not quite time to break out the lime greens, pinks, and oranges, but we are ready to change out our blacks and greys of winter.  The solution?  Beautiful Bronze!

Bronze is warm, rich and elegant.  We love it for interiors, upholstery, walls, accents, exteriors, clothing, sculptures, and, of course, jewelry.  When used for interior decor it evokes an inviting and sophisticated feeling.  In fashion, it compliments all skin tones and reminds us as the lovely summer sun-kissed color we all wish to achieve.

This beautiful custom-made railing is perfect in bronze.  It is more sophisticated than a more traditional black iron, and more elegant than a shiny brass.  The bronze-colored wall is perfect too.

Bronze-toned pillows tossed on a bed or sofa add warmth and interest.

The bronze accent tiles in this backsplash are timeless and will go with any color scheme.

How lovely would this bronze basin and faucet be in a powder room!

We love the bronze accents on this champagne gown.  Lovely!

A metallic bronze leather purse perfectly compliments any color you choose to wear.
Imagine this yummy bronze sandal on your feet!

What other colors inspire you?

Friday Favorites: Easy Hors d'oeuvres

We've made it to our first Friday as bloggers and want to start a regular feature: "Friday Favorites".  As the panther prowls the city, she shares with us her favorite finds.  In return we would like to share our favorites with you.  Stay tuned each week as we cover a different category.

Today's favorite is easy hors d'oeuvres.

While routine grocery shopping at Trader Joe's I came across an interesting package of little cracker-like discs.  Thinking they were cookies, I picked up the package to find they were actually slices of a prune walnut log.  I had to buy a pack to try these out.  I served these with a blue brie cheese.  They are delicious!  The sweetness of the prunes, and the crunchy nutty flavor of the walnuts are perfect with the salty, creamy cheese.  Add a glass of wine and it is Heaven!  I shared this idea with my bookkeeper who served it at a party that weekend and reported that everyone raved about this tasty treat.

Another new favorite hors d'oeuvre is the Opal apple.  This delicious new variety is a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Topaz apple.  Not only delicious, this apple is beautiful.  It is bright yellow with hints of orange blush.  This fabulous fruit is crunchy and sweet.  An added plus, it is resistant to oxidation after slicing making it the perfect choice for hors d'oeuvres or fruit trays.  Pair this magnificent fruit with a goat cheese and a glass of wine.

Try out these easy hors d'oeuvres and let us know what you think.  Share with us your favorite easy hors d'oerve recipes or tricks.

Have a lovely weekend!

Faretti Biscotti Liqueur

Recently, while on the prowl in beautiful San Francisco, the panther happened upon a new tasty treat:  Faretti Biscotti Liqueur.  This is a delicious, sweet, dessert liqueur, made in Italy.  It is deliciously flavored with hints of nuts, citrus, and fennel.  Sadly, this product is not yet sold in Oregon but it can be ordered from California and shipped to your home.  It is amazing!

We recently served it straight in a stemmed liquer glass to accompany our dessert of lemon cello cake.  The hum of "mmmmmm" resonated throughout the house as everyone who tasted it was in love.  Serve it straight, on ice, in coffee, with cream, or try this recipe:

Tuscan Sidecar
1 part Faretti
1 part Cognac
1 part lemon juice
dash of orange bitters

Find more recipes and learn more about this deliciously fabulous product at:  http://www.chathamimports.com/.

Share your Faretti recipe with the panther!

Candle Love

If you know either of us, it is no secret that we both LOVE candles.  It doesn't matter what time of year it is, candles always add lovely atmosphere and elegance to any room.  We thought we'd share some tips with you to help you maximize your candle-burning experience.

1.  Always purchase candles made with a high-quality wax blend and 100% lead-free wicks.  Some candle enthusiasts may swear by one wax blend over another, but in our experience any high-quality blend will give you a nice consistant burn.  Wicks can be cotton, a blend, or even wood, but just make sure they are lead free. (Most are these days, but surprisingly lead is still present in some low-end brand candles.)

2.  If you do not burn your candles right away they may collect dust which sticks to the wax.  The secret to making your dusty candles look clean and new again is panty-hose!  Take some of your old hose, place your hand inside and rub the candle.  The dust comes off and stick to the panty hose leaving your candle like new.

3.  Taper candles are beautiful and elegant on a dinner table but burn very fast.  To add a little extra burn time, place your tapers in the freezer a few hours before your dinner, then take them out right before you are ready to use them.

4.  Always trim your wicks before lighting your candles.  If you have a brand new candle, trim the wick to about 1/4" long.  Trim the wick of burned candles to a quarter inch as well being sure to get the entire ashy "mushroom bloom" off.  Make sure no wick or ash debris falls into the wax.  Specialized scissors called wick trimmers are available for this purpose.  They are curved to fit down into your candle, clip the wick, and then house the wick in a little compartment that you can then empty into the garbage.  This is a very practical item for candle enthusiasts.

5.  Did you know that candles have a memory?  This is important to know about pillar candles or poured candles in glass.  When you initially burn a candle and the wax melts in a circle, the next time you light the candle it will melt out to the same point, then burn down.  When burning candles in glass you always want to burn it long enough on its initial burn so that the wax melts all the way out to the perimeter.  This will insure that you will waste as little of the wax as possible, maximizing the life of the candle.  For pillar candles, you usually want a wax wall left around the perimeter so let the initial burn melt out leaving about a  1/4" - 1/2" wall then extinguish the candle.  The next time you light the pillar, the candle should "remember" this and melt down leaving the lovely glow of the flame through the wax wall.  Another little secret:  If you have a unique or expensive sculpted candle that you do not have the heart to "burn up", remember this memory secret.  Light your precious pillar and let it melt out about a 1 1/2" - 2" diameter.  The next few times you light it let it burn down until about a 2" deep "well" is formed in your pillar.  Now you can drop in a tea-light or votive to burn and your precious candle will last forever!

6.  Keep lit candles out of drafts.  This sounds so obvious, but drafts are your candle's enemy.  They cause the flame to go to one side or another making the candle burn unevenly.

7.  Extinguishing your candles:  We all blow out candles because it is what we automatically know to do, but it is not the best thing for your candle or your surroundings.  Blowing out a candle often spreads smoke and debris to land on your walls or other surrounding surfaces.  Also, it rarely completely extinguishes the wick leaving it to smoulder and smoke a bit longer.  Instead, use a snuffer for tapers or dinner candles.  Just cover the flame with the bell of the snuffer and hold for a few seconds.  This will completely smother the flame and wil not spread smoke or debris.  For pillars or poured candles in glass, use a wick dipper.  This is a little metal device that kind of looks like a crochet hook.  Take the dipper and push the lit wick down into the melted wax which will extinguish the flame and eliminate all smoke.  Then take the hook and pull the wick straight up again.  The wick is now extinguished and coated in wax which will make it quick and easy to light the next time.

Happy burning!
