Decorating with Artificial Flowers

It is as rainy as ever in Portland, but the panther knows spring is on the way.  The dreary days have left us in need of some spring cheer, and since we cannot find it outside, we are creating it indoors.

Artificial stems have long been taboo but not any more.  Gone are the days of unearthly shades of green ivy stuffed in every soffit, or day-glow yellow sunflowers shoved in ceramic vases.  Today's silk florals are so realistic in appearance and texture that often even a touch-test doesn't reveal the truth.

For best results, choose artificial stems of flowers that are in season or just about in season.  For early spring think cherry blossoms, tulips, forsythia, and dogwood blossoms.

Mix textures and types of flowers to create interest.

Add real elements from nature in with your artificial stems.  Real natural twigs, bark, and moss are all beautiful elements to mix in and enhance the artificial stems.

Think beyond the vase!  Artificial flowers and stems do not need to be plunked in a vase.  Twist artificial branches with real moss down your dining table or across your mantle, mix mossy bark and clipped silk blooms in a shallow dish, or wind artificial stems in your chandelier... the possibilities are endless.

Finally, to really fool your guests into believing your artificial florals are real, do not forget fragrance.  Bob's Flower Shop by Trapp candles is the perfect realistic flower scent.  Learn more about this fabulous candle on this Friday's post.
